Bathroom Makeover

My spare bathroom was hands down the ugliest room in my house.  The vanity was stained and had water damage to it.  The counter top and sink were just plain ugly.  The window and trim were a really dark stain and the walls were pretty plain.  Oh and the shower is just hideous {it doesn't show in the picture but the tile is white with the blue marble vaining thru it}.
I painted the vanity with Rust-oleum Oil-Based Protective Enamel Semi-Gloss White paint.  It turned out beautifully.  I also used the same white oil based paint for the window sashes, door and all wood trim.  For the walls I used Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin Enamel in Rapture Blue.    I bought a new {to me} vanity top from Habitat for Humanity Restore.  I was able to get a faucet from my dad.

I just couldn't afford to change out the tile or the shower door so to hide my hideous shower I purchased a shower rod and curtain.   For the final touches of the makeover I purchased new cabinet hardware and a new toilet seat from Home Depot, a rug from Wal-Mart and accessories from JoAnn fabrics and Michael's.

New end table

Another piece of furniture? Well yeah {smile}.  In my old house I didn't have room for a side table for the chair.  In my new home, I now have the room.  Unfortunately, when I decided to stop at one of the local antique stores I wasn't planning on purchasing a table and therefore did not have any measurements with me.  I bought the table anyway after some haggling with the proprietors, getting the selling price from $45 to $36.  It is a Mersman Table which doesn't really mean much to me but they were in business from the 1920's to 1995.  So the table ended up looking too big next to the chair.  The good news is that I had another table at the end of my hallway that will work with the chair and the new table will work at the end of the hall. {Win/Win}.
Again, I need to do some work to this piece.  I don't intentionally go looking for furniture that needs to be restored/refinished/repaired {well not all time anyway}.  But on a limited budget I do what I can.  To buy some of these pieces that do not need work would cost more than I have to spend at the moment.  Don't get me wrong, I am NO expert at this furniture restoration/refinishing/repairing but I know enough to get me by.

Garage Sale Table

While out garage sale shopping I came across this beauty.  I saw the table on my way to a sale next door and thought..."Oh I'll go next door and then pick this up on the way back".  That was almost my worst mistake.  The price tag said $5.00 (yeah you heard me right.  Only $5.00).  When I came back to purchase it a couple was looking it over and to my horror they said to the seller "will you take $3.00 for it?"  Well he said "No" and they looked at each other discussing whether they wanted to pay the $5.00 or not, so I walked over to the seller, handed him a five and said I would pay the $5.00.  Dirty I know, but really they really acted like they didn't want to pay the $5.00 and I looked at it as that I did actually look at it first.  My lesson though was to never think that I would come back to something.  If I really want it, I need to just buy it then and there.
Now I know it needs some work.  But I'm not afraid of a challenge.  Once I get this stripped, stained (if it needs it) and a coat of poly it is going to be beautiful.  I've started stripping it already and will have to post some in progress pictures later.

So I picked this up at a thrift store for $40.  I don't even know exactly what I'm going to do with it.  I already have a china cabinet in my dining room...so it is a no go there.  More than likely it is going to end up in my sewing room.  If it was a little smaller I would put it in my spare bedroom but it is actually quite big.  Anyway, I just loved the look of it and those wonderful handles {Wow} they are so neat.
Sorry for the poor quality pictures.  At the moment it is sitting in my garage until I can decide where I want to put it.  And of course this will need some work.  The top needs some new veneer or a strategically placed table runner.

I am a DIYer at heart more from a cost standpoint {I just can't afford to hire someone} But I also enjoy doing these things myself even if it means it will take 3 times longer for it to be done.
